SSK = slip one stitch as if to knit, slip another stitch as if to knit, insert left needle into the two slipped stitches from the front and knit them together.

INSTRUCTIONS

Cast on 100 stitches on a Size 4 needle. Make a ribbing of knit 1, purl for 2 1/2 inches.

Change to Size 6 needles and continue in stockinette stitch (knit on right side, purl on wrong side).

Work even until piece measures 18 inches. Bind off 5 stitches at the beginning of the next two rows.

Next row:

Knit 45 stitches, attach another ball of yarn, knit 45 stitches. Purl back, using the two balls of yarn for the separate sides.

Knit to last 4 stitches before break, knit 2 together, knit 2. After break, knit 2, SSK, knit to end. Purl one row.

Continue working evenly on each side until piece measures 10 inches from armhole, bound off stitches. Bind off all stitches.

Work the back the same as the front, until the piece measures 18 inches. Bind off 5 stitches at the beginning of the next two rows. Work even for another 10 inches.

Bind off 30 stitches at the beginning of the next row, then knit to end.

Repeat this row, then place the remaining 30 stitches on the holder for the neck.

Sew side and shoulder seams.

Place 30 stitches for back of neck on a Size 4 needle. Pick up an additional 110 stitches along the neck opening, making sure there is one stitch centered on the bottom of the V opening. Knit 1 row, placing a marker after the center stitch of the V.

Begin working on a knit 1, purl 1 ribbing on the next row, until three stitches before the maker, purl 2 together, knit center stitch and purl 2 together after the center stitch. Make sure that the center stitch is always knit. Sometimes there will be two purl stitches next to this center stitch. This is okay and will be corrected during the next decrease row.

Work one row in knit 1, purl 1 rib with no decrease at the bottom of the V.

Repeat these two rows until the ribbing measures 1 1/4 inches. Bind off.

Pick up 80 stitches around the armholes. Work a knit 1, purl 1 ribbing for 1 1/4 inches. Bind off.
